| This is the best album from the original line-up. "The Shield" is the one song from Mk. 1 that can stand with material from the later Purple marks. Overall, a very solid release. But this is far from being in the same league as PURPENDICULAR, IN ROCK, MADE IN JAPAN, or PERFECT STRANGERS.

| I've always loved this album. No, its not metal like the Gillan era. Or bluesy like the Coverdale era. This one has an almost medieval feel throughout(even the cover songs). This album definitely isn't for everyone, but if you like epic songs and swirling keyboards give this one a try.

| Too dated for me but I felt I just had to have it for two reasons: Complete the essential collection, and Support these dudes in any way possible.

| My favorite record before the sound change by a mile. Love Evans' smooth vocal and the jams are jam-tastic.

| ok release for DEEP PURPLE and at that time back in the late 60s it was all about the jam and not about the songs i guess!Lord s keys are excellent and the sound is typical of that decade!not bad,not great
