Extreamly good album!!!

From: Alberto Date: August 20, 2001 at 6:58
A little bit too cold as rocking (more than the former Images & Words), but it still kicks a lot and some songs are incredibly well-composed. Real real good...

From: Chris Date: September 29, 2001 at 13:42
Dream Theater opts to go the dark route with their writing and LaBrie's vocals on this outing. I must admit that it works and works well. This is a high quality disc with excellent prog metal leanings. Highly recommended.

Great album! Those guys love to show their skills. I prefer rock n'roll, 3, 4 chords.. but still it's a good album. I love the last track, Space-Dye Vest.

From: Baris Date: September 5, 2002 at 7:28
A really exciting record. "Caught In A Web", "Erotomania", "The Silent Man", "Lie", "Lifting Shadows of a Dream", and "Space Dye Vest" are the ones I liked most. Guitar sound of Petrucci is so clear and fine. It worths to add to your archive...

From: blueblood Date: September 18, 2003 at 19:25

Can you imagine having to follow up an album as amazing as Images and Words? Well DT accomplished that with an equally incredible album. A Mind Beside Itself (tracks 4, 5 and 6) is the albums centerpiece and displays increidible musicicianship (instrumental Erotomania) epic intensity (Voices) and lyrical genuis (The Silent Man). Caught In A Web and Lifting Shadows Off A Dream still stand as some of Dream Theater finest moments. After Images and Words, be sure to aquire this one.

This is Dream theater at their best. Making a great album that has not one even so-so song. All the songs are well thought out, and sound good. A mind beside itself is a masterpiece of music. This is definitely and album you cannot leave home without.

This is a stud of an album. These guys wrote and played a super tight album. Words don't begin to describe how awesome and talented these guys are. If you don't have this album, get it. Probably their best album overall.

From: bundy Date: March 12, 2004 at 22:46
One of the few bands that hasn't choked off their follow-up to an album that is a masterpiece. Very unfortunate that this was the last studio album to feature their keyboardist and main lyricist Kevin Moore. Their lyrics really seemed to suffer after this album.

I also have this one and it sounds very similar to 'Images and words'. I still like James' voice, the musicians are top notch and there are some great moments, but IMO they're just too few and far between. I'm sure for prog fans this and 'Images and words' are stunning... but unfortunately to simple me I don't get 'em.

Third studio album of the band and still delivering top notch Prog Metal songs but not as solid ones as the ones from "Images And Words"(their best effort ever!!!)...best tracks in here for me are "Caught In A Web" & "Lifting Shadows Of A Dream"...some other good moments are tracks 1,5,8,9 & 10...an enjoyable release...90/100
