A masterpiece of ProgRock.

From: Daniel Meneses Date: April 16, 2001 at 11:08
One of the most important albums of the 90's. It set the standards of progressive metal and influenciated many bands in this kind of music. Brilliantly played and a stuning album. A most have for hard 'n' heavy lovers.

From: Derek Date: April 27, 2001 at 20:23
Nice work, but over-rated for the most part. Talented musicians for sure, but way too much money was spent to make them sound better than they are.

From: MetalHead Mark Date: April 27, 2001 at 20:54
I don't agree that it's overproduced. I think it was done just right! These guys aren't gods but they got lots of talent and this one is above average.

Very Good musicians make reborn prog rock! Imagine a misc of Rush, Kansas and all the other "monsters" of old prog-rock with the strenght and young brilliantness of more recent hard rock. That' s it. Sometimes much too technical and fragmented but... Excellent. Perhaps one of the best albums I ever heard.

What can I say? An amazing album all over, there is not one bad song on this one. The mix of different styles on this album is incredible. You have trash\metal riffs, to more classical prog riffs ala. Rush and Kansas. If you dont allready own this album, get it!!! I guarante it will you give you a hard on that will stick for days!

From: Rycheage Date: September 3, 2001 at 18:10
An instant classic from the day it was released. When I first heard "Pull Me Under" the riffs in it had me shaking. This album is an absolute must buy for any rock or metal fan!!

Hi from Spain! I bought this CD without knowing what i was going to hear and the first time i listened to it i thought: "what the heck is this?" I didn't like it at all (too long songs, not catchy). However i gave them a second and a third chance and my opinion began to change...the more i listen to Images and Words the more i like!!!! Strange but true!!! Now i only have two words to describe thia album: A MATERPIECE!!! If you want to say you like good music then this album is a MUST!!! Cheerio!

From: imanothere Date: April 22, 2002 at 9:24
I bought this CD after seeing the video 'Pull Me Under' for the first time in quite a long time. I always loved that song so I decided to go out and get the CD. It is quite an orginal format, but none of the tracks had the same feel as 'Pull Me Under'. I thought I was listening to Kenny G on the second track. I am not knocking the album nor am I saying it isn't a musical originality. I'm just saying that if you loved 'Pull Me Under', you might be disappointed in the rest of the CD. Not really so

From: imanothere Date: April 22, 2002 at 9:32
cont. from above....Not really so much as a str8 out rocker but more of a musical potpourri with a splash of metal. It kind of reminds me of an "experimental" Styx album.

From: Javi Date: May 16, 2002 at 9:25
Hi from spain too!

From: Andre Date: May 23, 2002 at 13:42
This is the where a perfect production meets great musicians, without changing the music, duo to commercial success.Metallica meets Marillion meets Yes meets Queensryche!Progressive masterpiece!Great Guitars, awsome keybords create heavenly melodies.Myung is a bass wizard,Portnoy,ah,this guy is a freak on drums.Might have 8 arms!LaBrie sings like an angel in anger.Songs break from caotic rythms to the most beautiful, plain melody.Grace under pressure!!!New bands should not try to copy them!

From: jason Date: June 1, 2002 at 14:50
This is the only Dream Theater that I own. These guys are something els. People compare them to Queensryche, only not so political (thank God). I think that Dream Theater is more like RUSH. The musicianship here is outstanding. They are not one of my favorite bands but their talent can't be questioned. They are the RUSH of the 90's and beyond........

From: SrFloppy5 Date: June 11, 2002 at 11:38

From: RichieRocker Date: August 11, 2002 at 21:55
John Petrucci is unbelieveable this album is worth getting just to hear his guitar playing.

From: Baris Date: September 10, 2002 at 1:42
There is one classic word to say: "SUPERRRR". These guys are the gods of their instruments.

From: portuguese fan Date: October 22, 2002 at 8:25
This was the first album that I ever bought. Still the best!!! Not only one of the best works in the history of Rock, but also a real "monument to the dreamer"... Os Dream Theater vão continuar a fazer história!!!

It's all right, but the keyboards suck (talented but are way too obvious)

From: Emilio Date: March 30, 2003 at 13:40
Obra maestra absoluta. 10/10.

From: Satriani Date: March 30, 2003 at 19:56

This album is just not songs...this is a masterpiece every song brings out a musician instead of a half ass act...one of the greatest and underrated albums of all time...i think its their best Dream Theater kicks ass

From: Blue Tequila Date: June 5, 2003 at 5:13
I found this for 99 cents. This is the first time I've heard Dream Theater. Muy buen disco!

From: purrfect-kat Date: June 26, 2003 at 8:58
I bought this cd because of the good reviews and I must say that I was disppointed with it. The band plays good but the songs are nothing to write home to mom about.

From: freddy de keyze Date: June 26, 2003 at 9:04
You're talking about a milestone in music history here, dear purrfect-kat ! Maybe you're disappointed because you don't like prog metal. This is masterpiece and the quote 'the band plays good' is the understatement of the year ! These guys are all professional musicians, right out of the academy, and they play well. Let's be honest : there are bands I like more than Dream Theater, but as musicians they have no competition from any band (what kind of genre they play) on this planet ! Superior !

From: Decibel Dave Date: June 27, 2003 at 12:23
I have to say that for the most part, I agree with purrfect-kat. Though the album has some good moments, I have to wonder what the fuss is. The songwriting seems to me to be only average. Granted it is unique and all, but that doesn't mean it's great. I like what I've heard from Lana Lane, for example, much better. I will give it a few more listens - maybe one of these times I'll finally "get it"

From: Decibel Dave Date: June 27, 2003 at 12:26
I guess I have a different opinion than some people though, let me be clear - to me, the song is the important thing. Granted, a great song will be even greater if played by great musicians than mediocre ones. But I'd *much* rather hear a great song played by average musicians, than an average song played by great musicians. Images and Words would be a great example the latter category for me.

From: purrfect-kat Date: June 30, 2003 at 12:29
Well said Dave . . I feel the same way about it

Heavy Harmonies Volunteer
From: Blue Charvel Date: June 30, 2003 at 12:49
The song is the important thing no doubt. But I think everyone's idea of the perfect song is probably not the same. I think this disc is extremely well written and they most certainly toot my horn, but if I'm in the mood for catchy, hook-driven tuneage, this is about the last band I would listen to. These guys are all about subtlety and dynamics with a good measure of complexity and technical proficiency thrown in. If you don't like prog-rock, chances are you will not like this either.

From: blueblood Date: September 3, 2003 at 11:43

From: blueblood Date: September 3, 2003 at 11:44

From: Rhoma Irama Date: November 18, 2003 at 4:00
more practice mr.petrucci!!! bad technic, u must try to find my cd, listen my music, listen my finger dancing on my guitar, try to learn!!! i'm Rhoma Irama the king of dangdut from Indonesia

From: Jimbo Date: November 22, 2003 at 1:15
It's going to be hard to follow Rhoma's insightful comments above... but here goes. This album is maddening to me because it is technically superior to much of the "artistic metal" that came out around the same time, but the songs are still more like aggressively constructed background music (Petrucci's solos excluded). If you like this kind of prog rock, check out the band "Fayrewether" and their 1989 release "Power Play". Lastly, what is a dangdut and how does one become its king?

From: gubi Date: December 8, 2003 at 15:10
One of the best albums of all times. They have put rock where noone has ever done, and will ever do. Who knows?... There are no words to describe what ears and soul can feel: you should be a Goethe or something to do it

From: Raksu Date: December 10, 2003 at 18:03
One of my best CD's in tower.. stunning melodic progressive heavy metal and great playing!

From: meradona Date: January 19, 2004 at 18:36

From: Bill Date: January 23, 2004 at 7:17
Under A Glass Moon is one of the finest achievements in lyrics and music, IN ALL OF HISTORY. Every time I hear it I'm taken somewhere else, it's unbelievable. The whole album is truly worthy of endless accolades, but Learning To Live springs to mind immediately. Again musically it travels where few bands dare to explore, and again the lyrics make me wish John Myungs was still weilding the pen in Drea Theater. An absolute must have...

From: mauricio Date: February 6, 2004 at 10:44

this album has some great ballads and great progressive songs. Learning to live is just one of the best songs they has ever done and Metroplis is just a classic. All together this is an awsome album of great progressive rock. you Shouldn't be without it.

From: bundy Date: March 12, 2004 at 22:41
An amazing album. This is Dream Theater firing on all cylinders. This would make my top 10 albums of all time for ANY genre.

From: ksymrtn Date: March 13, 2004 at 11:04
I can't even put into words the description of this CD...OK, I will try....Excellent, Brillant,Exceptional......The music, lyrics, production are beyond anything else, I could listen to this CD a million times over and never tire of it.......it is definitely a Van Gogh of Music...........This is my favorite release from Dream Theater, the others pale in comparison, IMO.

From: allen Date: March 18, 2004 at 16:14
I will agree that these guys will never be confused with Bob Dylan in the songwriting department, but this album remains a classic! Prog is a wholly different animal; not everyone gets it. If everyone did, their CDs would consistantly make the top 10. The new CD,"Train of Thought", is also incredible. One of prog's most talented bands.

From: jirky Date: March 21, 2004 at 6:11

Dear jirky-you are supposed to turn the Cd ON after you insert the disc (LOL) Boring??????-Yeah whatever Nice try at upsetting the masses and trying to get a bit of action going on the board-however I think you are in a minority od 1 on this one.

PARA JGG. A MI ME GUSTA MOGOLLON EL A.O.R. Y TAMBIEN EL HARD ROCK SOY UN SUPERFAN DE GRUPOS COMO: TEN, HAREM SCAREM, JOURNEY, ETC Y NO DEJO DE RECONOCER QUE ESTE DISCO ES LA OSTIA CON MUCHAS MAYUSCULAS. DREAM THEATER SON EL MEJOR GRUPO DE HOY EN DIA CON MUCHISIMA DIFERENCIA

From: Mike P. - TX Date: April 6, 2004 at 12:52
Their songs are too long...I could never get into any songs except "Pull Me Under", which I first thought was Helloween when I first heard only a snippit of the song. Maybe I should give this one another try?..

From: TIM (2) Date: June 3, 2004 at 12:35
I'm not a prog fan, and this isn't really my thing, but I have to say that "Another Day" is one the greatest AOR tunes ever. The solo is magnificent, and for me this song alone is worth the price of this disc.

From: Kim Jackie Date: June 8, 2004 at 18:13
What can I say. I always liked the Prog music and this guys are the grandparentrs of progressive metal. Noone is as good and technical comparable with Dream Theater.

From: Knuckles Date: June 9, 2004 at 13:30
Man,I dont know.Dont get me wrong,I love DT and they are a very good talent, but give THRESHOLD a try. These guys are for sure in the same league, and in fact,I think I like them better.

From: damonskee Date: July 9, 2004 at 15:11
this album is the best prog rock will ever see. however, the singer doesnt seem like he should be in this band. I could picture LaBrie as the singer for journey or something lighter like that. an example that would be a good match for this band would be someone that sounds like layne staley, yknow? someone thats a little darker, lyrically and performance wise. but other then that this cd is amazing. PETRUCCI IS GOD

From: holyroller Date: July 13, 2004 at 9:31

No more words, enjoy!!!!!!!!!

1 of the GREATEST achievments in rock/metal music, and in prog of course. the band that does EVERYTHING allright in the album that created the Progressive Metal! WARMLY RECOMENDED, DT EMPHASISES THAT GOD LIVES ON EARTH! 12/10

From: Geoff Date: March 5, 2005 at 18:38
After hearing Winter Rose and loving James Labrie's voice, I thought- even though I hate prog with a passion- I might be able to enjoy this. Well, I can honestly appreciate the musical genius and song-writing prowess, but I just can't get into this kind of stuff. The sound is too hard to enjoy because if you find a section, or melody or moment you like it can be there for the tiniest moment before it's ripped away and the song takes a completely different direction. Simply said, I don't get prog

From: AOR freaky Date: March 6, 2005 at 3:53
Geoff : these guys are genius and their music is ART, HEAVENLY ! The best technical band in the whole rock spectrum !

man!!!!!!! if there is one metal prog release, then this is the master, tons of others bands came after this one, and some great bands, but this one paved the way for the metal prog movement, just listen to the last half of #5 Metropolis, man!!!!! This entire album is a classic, all the way through, some great slower tunes that are extremely beautiful amidst some of the best songs ever released by a band, hmmm, wonder if I like Dream Theater??? hahaha Thee top metal prog release ever!!!!!

One to many ballads. Good songs on here like Learning to Live, Metropolis, and Pull Me Under. Pull is the only really heavy song here. Otherwise its a mixture of uptempo rockers like Under A Glass Moon. But the ballads, Surrounded and Another Day sound really out of place. They should have edited these songs and put A Change of Seasons on here in its original form. That was the original plan anyway.

"Take the time" despliega la coordinación

The production is huge and the songs are magnificent! When i bought this in 1992 this was a total blast and it still is among the best. David Prater´s gotta be one of the greatest producers of all time (check out also 2 Firehouse albums s/t & Hold your fire produced by the man). I´m sad that Kevin Moore left out ´cause he really was a keyboard wizard! DT has done some good & bad albums after this but Images and words is still their finest hour! 100/100.

To this day I belive this album is one of the best prog albums out there. A beautiful mix of synth and guitars and soaring vocals. I did find some of their later stuff a bit out there but this album and the previous ones really shine. 86/100

when I heard that one of my friends listens to them and taht they are playing progressive rock/metal, I said well that's just too complicated for me and at that time I was totaly into hair, pop and glam metal.but after several years later I decided to listen to this album and whooo, I was amazed. these guys are really really taleneted and they aded here the heaviness and great keyboard driven melodies. my faves: pull me under, another day, take the time, under a glass moon and metropolis.

Alright now here it comes my comment in English...for me,IMHO,this album is the band's best effort ever,period!..."Pull Me Under" is the best cut in here and that's it..."Another Day"(beautiful),"Take The Time","Surrounded" & "Wait For Sleep"(nice) are also very catching moments of the record...an almost to perfection release...95/100
