Extreme's turn to jump on the alternacrap, "let's write some really boring songs with no discernible melody" bandwagon. Major piece of crap. 1/10 rating. Why turn your back on the sound and style that made you popular?

From: Reno Date: September 16, 2001 at 23:00
And still waiting for the Punchline for this joke of a cd.

From: Nuno(Hollywood) Date: April 24, 2002 at 13:17
Great album...A little jagged...But fuckin' great...Songs like Unconditionally,Shadow Boxing and There is no God make it worthwhile!!! A prelude to the end

From: WidoMakr Date: June 6, 2002 at 18:06

From: Dan Calcagno Date: June 30, 2002 at 19:02
Punchline is a great album. It's a great band with a disc full of great songs. People who don't like this album are expecting to much from it.

From: jens Date: July 20, 2002 at 0:47
WHO the hell cares about 'the fans the got them there'. get over it. i want good music, nothing else. if it is totally different, so be it. it is good to be shaken up. unfortunately this albums sucks sour donkey ass, so... well, i wasn't happy

From: koogles Date: July 31, 2002 at 8:22
Gary Cherone ruined Van Halen and why didn't anyone see it coming after this steaming load of garbage?

From: howe Date: January 29, 2003 at 20:16
Extreme is what I consider a good band: every album is different from all the others. Midnight Express, Leave Me Alone, No Respect and Shadow Boxing are among my favorite songs from the band.

This was the end of the band. Maybe 1 or 2 good songs, but it is NOT a good album at all.

From: FM Date: March 17, 2003 at 3:02
Unfortunately, this cd was a HUGE disappointment, and I still can't force myself to like it. The first three were killer, but with this one they totally missed the shot. They are even unrecognizable, seems like a totally different band. No brilliant vocals, no beautiful melodies, no amazing guitar-work, no hard rock. Just a bunch of boring, pointless, songs. I still wonder what happened to the band to put out an album like this.

From: robert Date: March 17, 2003 at 15:04
Muy Flojo, a años luz d su obra d arte PORNOGRAFFITY!!

From: Jeremy Witte Date: May 13, 2003 at 19:50
THESE GUYS only got worse! GAG ME!

From: Kevin Date: May 29, 2003 at 21:00
a few decent songs, but compared to their older stuff, not nearly as good. By the way, this is still better than Van Halen 3 by a long ways. Don't blame Cherone for that debacle. Also better than all that whiney-skater-punk-rap shit that's out now.

From: keebler Date: October 8, 2003 at 2:04
another strange cd from a great 80's band i guess this was the end there were a few good songs.

From: Federico Date: November 28, 2003 at 20:32
I´ve been reading the comments and what I think is that the only reason some people don´t like "Waiting For The Punchline" is because they can´t appreciate good music. I´m an amateur guitar player, and I tell you, the performance and technique, not only Nuno´s, but the whole band is really good. The other albums are awesome too, but I don´t think this one deserves such a bad qualification. If you want to tell me something my emails are 38144@electronica.frc.utn.edu.ar and fmmarchetti@hotmail.com

From: Scandinavia Date: November 29, 2003 at 1:54
Hey, good for you Frederico! The general opinion is that this album is too modern sounding...It strays too much...

From: Gar Date: December 12, 2003 at 18:07
Most of the songs on this have a pissed off vibe to them, so its perfect listening material for when you're having a bad day. I can't really understand why people think this sounds alternative or grunge. It's heavier and angrier than their previous stuff, but it still sounds like Extreme to me.

From: extreme_rules Date: January 29, 2004 at 19:42
Hey, let Hard Rock evolve! Can't you guys see we're killing these bands by expecting them to play the same things over and over again? I love this album and it's a pity this extraordinary and ecletic band split up.

From: Liquid Len Date: January 30, 2004 at 2:24
Big disappointment to me - I expected something a bit more, like on III they were just getting their sound together. But on IV, suddenly it's all stripped down sounding - bands really shouldn't do that till they've actually gone over the top and had their knuckles rapped. I admit, some of the songs (There Is No God, Midnight Express, Cynical) have a real furious energy to them, and it is not just repeating their old stuff - but the heart of it seems gone and it's now just one more heavy sounding

CRAP!!! UTTER AND TOTAL!!! NUFF SAID!!

From: run2u Date: May 21, 2004 at 22:42

From: Big Papa K Date: June 13, 2004 at 0:39
Extreme "jumps the shark" with this album. Combining grunge rip offs with song titles that sounds like the band wants you to feel sorry for them is no way to end a career. 3/10

From: Metal Jay Date: August 4, 2004 at 20:14
I am not fond of this one. It reminds me too much of Living Colour, if that makes any sense. I liked this group, but this is not very good. Am I the only one that hears Living Colour here?

From: jack Date: August 9, 2004 at 5:43
???-thats what is fit for the typeof music extreme are playing as seen above. I've tried to give these albums lots of try since i brought it already but like all the other extreme albums, they are not good except for the previous one. The only thing worth listening in extreme is their guitar player. Nuno is the only 'positive' and good thing that are present in the band. i think he's a talented and fantastic guitar player. My favourite after slash, lynch, bratta, norum,cc deville, eddie and vai.

From: jack Date: August 9, 2004 at 5:44
And a few others that i forget!

From: darwin Date: September 9, 2004 at 1:27
Fuyckin jack the crack, you said you didnt like cc deville in other posts and now you do? Stop contradicting yourself asswipe and get an education

From: Geoff Date: September 9, 2004 at 20:14
I'm not quite sure whether this disc sounded better before or after I vomitted on it. All I know is that it sounded atrocious when I put it in my CD player, I whipped it out and had an incident (Accidentally aimed at the CD) due to the ill feeling it had left in my stomach, put it back in and it still sounded awful. Hmmmm... I'm just not sure. Awful CD, and I'm still waiting for the punchline in this cruel joke.

From: Harry Date: December 12, 2004 at 17:58
With fans like you, Geoff, I think it isn't hard to understand why there were no more albums from Extreme after this one. These guys were just too good to be labeled (as the question marks on "category" show). A bit like Queen... Great album!

From: Harry Date: December 12, 2004 at 18:09
The big irony about people that come to this site is that you guys love these bands so much that you just don't let them change. As a consequence, the big majority of them are now just good memories... Open your minds to this album. It has a really good vibe! 7/10 ... P.S. - I love everything that Nuno has done so far. He is a great composer rather than a great guitarist (although I think he's the best guitarist in the world)

From: Geoff Date: December 14, 2004 at 23:53
I'm not going to waste much time here Harry because I recently went to town on someone (Was it you before too?) with these dipshit accusations that everyone on this site is the same and cannot accept change in bands. A lot of people are disappointed when a band changes style dramatically, and I myself have been let down many times, but for me it is all in the song.If the songs and hooks are still there I'll love it.I hate this album 'cause it's crap IMO. Simple as that. Not because of the change

From: Harry Date: December 15, 2004 at 19:12
Sorry Geoff. Didn't mean to offend anybody on this site. Oh, and it wasn't me before - this is my first time! ...I'm only human and I hate when I hear everybody saying that something I love so much is nothing but a pile of shit! If you don't like it, it's okay. Just try to concentrate on the things you like and keep your words to yourself when all you have to say about an album is that you "vomitted on it!" That's not a very good argument, is it? But again, sorry if I offended you! Peace

From: Geoff Date: December 20, 2004 at 3:32
Harry, you didn't offend me mate. No worries As for expressing a view you may not agree with, my mission on this site is to give my honest comments on all I'm familiar with. If I think something is awful I will say it so that someone with similar tastes who might see my review later might research a bit more before forking out big dollars . Everyone needs to make up their own mind what they like, but I know I appreciate honest comments good/bad rather than endless (sometimes false) praise.

From: daniel Date: January 25, 2005 at 2:23
EXTREMELY underrated album. it's not "alternative" at all - it's just pure, groovy and pretty simple sounding rock with incredible guitar work. i hated it for one reason when it came out: i trusted all those people telling me "WFTP" was some sort of grunge with poor songwriting. blindly. what a sahem! today (after actually checking this album out) i must say this one is my favourite album by EXTREME. right behind "pornografiti". tasty songs, not as catchy as the previous albums, but still awesom

From: Gazza Styx Date: January 31, 2005 at 11:16
Simply put - The Worst CD Ever!

From: bundy Date: March 10, 2005 at 20:03
Most definitely not the worst CD ever. Extreme unfortunately were branded as jumping on the "alternative bandwagon" for making this album. Things could have been worse. Instead of the growth & stylistic shift they made on this album, they could have churned out a bunch of begging for pussy ballads like "More Than Words" or a bunch of played out guitar masturbation fests like "Get the Funk Out. This was not a bad album, by any standard.

From: zakkfan Date: April 6, 2005 at 7:26
Great hard rock !!! Little bit similar to Manic Eden. That was amazing rock music of mid 90's. It's a shame that most of you write such bad things about this record. I can't understad why all those bands stopped creating their very good music. It was a natural way of changing their image, music and so on. That was really good. Much better than many comebacks nowadays.

From: z4roxx Date: June 26, 2007 at 13:42
Yes great hard rock but the cd is throwin'out the window now ahahaha!

From: ninjapeter Date: January 3, 2009 at 20:11
???, Why the hell does a band think they can change thier sound without chinging their name. As far as I am concerned if you are selling a product aka music, keep your sound the same or change the name of it. People just want to know what they are buying. Would GM put their name on a Ford or visa versa?, I think not. Does buying an album have to be a guessing game? I used to love extreme until this junk, what a pure waste of money for me. This is just repetative crap with a dumbed down sound. Where are the melodies and skilled guitar playing that entails more that the same three chords over and over again. Even the singer on this is boring as hell. I would rate this a disappointing 3/10.

From: ninjapeter Date: January 3, 2009 at 20:39
What a waste of an excellent guitarist. He could play so much better with better song writting.

From: Wardy Date: February 12, 2012 at 4:10
Extreme's Waiting was def worth the wait and okay sure it was a 'slight' departure dressed in darkness and whatnot, but it worked well. Nuno could've done with more on show Cherone not quite the vibrance he was (IIISides was quite honestly a classic) but some good stuff on offer here. Straight off the bat ThereIsNoGod is a slow thunder and not what the title suggests (it's in the lyric and on that point many of the lyrics take centre stage here reflecting and thoughtful), HipToday difficult to swallow at first but wins those guitars winning, and while a few others worthy of mention the highlight has to be Cynical, a blistering rocker with plenty old Extreme groove, easily one of the finest tunes Extreme released and unfortunate the energy in that tune didn't cross over to more of the album. Good album that has aged well, not quite the departure first though given the benefit of time, a wonderful release to return to if at first cast aside. Rating 7.5

From: rick kerch vzla Date: May 20, 2014 at 18:11
This was a predictable album and with the grunge sound flourishing everywhere at that time it's kinda understandable...tracks 2,4,6(a pretty good upbeat instrumental one)& 8 are ok...80/100

From: hair metal again Date: November 17, 2016 at 10:48
excellent release once again by EXTREME , with Nuno trying to be heard more rock than previous ones!great performance as always and many groovy lines wil satisfy you ,but the songs arent as good as the previous ones ,so this album isnt so strong!"cynical",'hip today',"shadow boxing" are fine songs!i readf above something like "grunge",or "alternative"...it makes me wonder how can somebody say that...
