Great album. The album tracks are a little weaker, but the singles kick serious ass. Youth Gone Wild remains one of the greatest anthems of rebellion.

GREAT ANIMAL RECORD! One of the best melodic-metal bands, great singer and guitar work. The Skid's music has a very strong basis and quality. I know quite a lot people who became part of hard-rock audience after hearing this animal-album, a phenomenon similar to GNR or Motley Crue outbreak. For a deput this is a real eruption album and stands in the pole-position! My faves; "Can't Stand The Heartache", "18..", "I Rem.. U" and "Youth Gone Wild".

One of the best debut albums of the 80s. Great songs, great attitude. No filler whatsoever. I think initially their record label wanted to cash in on the similarities to Guns n Roses, but this album stands on its own. Skid Row didn't need to ride on anyone's coattails.

This may be the best debut of any rock band. (I said MAY). But like many bands, Skid Row put most of its eggs in one basket and never recaptured this blend of heavy/pop magic that made them credible AND listenable. As for slashh's last comment about nothing beating Appetite for Destruction--actually, I find that a sledge hammer does the trick.

This album has got to be the best metal album of all time with their amazing voice and super guitar riff. 'big guns' is my favourite in this album because of the chorus,especially the 'bang-bang' part. 'i remember you' is one of the best metal ballad i've heard(and believe me, i've heard lots of metal ballad before from 'bringing on the harthache' by def leppard to 'carrie' by europe to 'every rose has its thorn' by poison). the sreamin at the end of the song is awesome!RATING:10/10

Nothing you can say here that everyone doesn't already know, but what we have here is hard rock perfection. No point individually speaking of the songs because they're fantastic.Just want to say that as a lover of 'Youth gone wild' and 'Big Guns' (As well as '18 a life' of course, 'I remember you' is one of my favourite ballads of all time. Monster track... and those vocals!!! 9.5/10

Ditto exactly what Geoff said. Those are my favorite tracks here too and I Remember You is one of my favorite songs ever. I did a top 1000 song tournament on line once, and matched up the top 1000 rock and metal songs. (The #1 seed VS the #1000 seed would kick off round 1...) And in the end I Remember You was the last song standing. It's highly regarded by many as the best power ballad of all time and I'm not gonne try and disagree.

An absolute classic debut album... A complete breath of fresh air! WHAT THE F++K happened after this one? I know they got a little "harder," and I like metal as much as anyone, but they seemed to embrace the 90's / grungy movement more than any other "hair-band" of the era. I don't get it, although a few tracks from the subsequent albums were good, they NEVER approached the appeal of this release... at least not in my humble opinion. Too bad, really!!!

To gener8tr: I can understand where you're coming from, but "Slave" doesn't sound like grunge at all to me. It's in fact one of my favorite albums. It pushes the upper limits of "hair-metal", and is about as heavy as hair-metal can go and still be called hair-metal. "Slave" came out before "Nevermind" did, so I don't see how it embraced the grunge explosion since mainstream '90s grunge didn't exist yet. Btw, I like Skid Row's debut album too. They really progressed after this one though.

Voy a dar mi opinión,y sólo mi opinión:nada de recomendaciones,etc.Para mi SkidRow en esta época fue LA MEJOR BANDA(o la menos mala)dentro del hard-rock rebelde,macarra y"con pocas luces"de finales de los'80(cuyos máximos representantes fueron los gansos rosas).Rebeldía con rubios de bote(hey,sebastian!),mucho ruido y actitud furiosa-prefabricada mezclada con música predecible,repetitiva y la mayoría de veces cargada de MARKETING.Tanta promoción como pudieran tener las SpiceGirls o Ricky Martin.

Isa, ¿pero que dices? Si por un concierto de Sebastian Bach en el 2005 vas a juzgar a una banda que ha sacado discos como este.. te equivocas. Los tiempos del gran Bach ya hace tiempo que han pasado. Eso te pasa por ver conciertos de grupos que están en el declive de su carrera. Lo siento, pero que Bach tiene una voz privilegiada es indiscutible. Eso si, lo siento por el mierdon del concierto!

Su sonido hardrock americano ´80 con tintes punk y ramalazos glam en temas sensacionales como "Here I am" o "Can´t stand heartache" hacen un album muy bueno, y daban un aire fresco a la escena hardrockera mundial. Su segundo disco no pierde las directivas del primero, pero se adentra en terrenos más metálicos y con el tercero confirman que este primer disco tan solo fue un buen momento.Pero para mi con el tiempo han perdido..solo me qedo con su musica q no es poco...

Estoy de acuerdo con lo que se ha dicho por aqui en lo referente a su directo. No he estado en ningun concierto de Skid Row, pero tengo muchos videos y la verdad es q daban pena!. Esto ha desmitificado en cierto modo a esta gran banda. Gran banda de estudio, pero mala en directo (donde por otro lado realmente se demuestra la calidad, como ya se ha dicho por aquí). De todas formas reconozco que sus dos primeros discos son magnificos, con grandes baladas y canciones hard rockeras. Y aprecio mucho

I have "Youth Gone Wild" tattoed on my arm and I own this CD ( and STTG)twice, cause the first one I bought is a little scratched for the times I've listened t it!!!I couldn't breath without this album.Take a Look to"Oh Say Can You Scream" :Sebastian don`t always sucked live.I don't totally dig "I Remember You" I Think it brings a wrong idea about the band, and that a lot of people just relate this song to the band makes me sick.One of the greatest albums ever! This is the best fucking album I´ve ever heard. There is no doubt: Hard Rock = Skid Row. Sebastian has the most powerful voice in the entire world, he can reach notes that are "unreachable".

I love this record more now, than when it was released. But let's be honest people. This band is nothing now, that Bach is gone. He can't be replaced! 18 and life, Youth gone wild, and I remember you are 3 of the best songs, to come out of the whole 80's metal scene, they are that good. The 2nd record sounds nothing like this. They went heavier and it took a while to like it. But monkey business is where it's at for me on that record along with quicksand jesus. First 2 are all you need.

One of the best hair metal bands has recorded one of the best hair metal record-thats that one.Slave to the grind is great too, but its much heavier than this one.My fav. on that disc is "youth gone wild"-sure you must go wild when you are listening to this one."18 and life" is very good ballad(my sister loves that song) but for me much better is "i remember you".I also recomend first three one from that record. Too bad bach left the band.what is worse than changing the style-they did that-shame

Great Hard Rock, 17 años han pasado y aun en este momento estoy escuchando mi cinta uno de los discos que mas amo cuando era un adolescente solitario y rebelde este album era como mi novia Dios que recuerdos de lejos el mejor de la banda y uno de los mejores de toda la vida Youth Gone Wild & Eighteen And Life siempre seran los cortes mas grandes de este estupendo trabajo pero todos los demas temas cumplen un disco Inolvidable e Imprescindible 9.5/10

Muy buen inicio de los Skids, no podía empezar mejor el disco: "Big Guns" es un clásico ya del HardRock con pelotas! junto a "Youth Gone Wild"(Sonó muchas veces acá en Perú, clasicazo). "I Remember You"(Un shock por estas tierras) tremenda PowerBallad mi favorita junto a "Eighteen And Life". 9/10

I remember buying this on cassette around the time it came out, and I had never even heard anything by the band. I'd just bought a new Walkman and wanted something to try it out, so I decided to take a punt on this album. 21 years later, I sit here listening to the album on my PC ... oh how times change. One thing that hasnt changed though is how fucking good this album is. From start to finish this album just kicks arse. While they got gradually heavier on subsequent releases, they never bettered the mix of commercial rock with heavy metal that they created on this masterpiece. Bachs vocals are the focal point with good reason, as he was probably one of the strongest of his era, but the band was as tight as a ducks arse, and neither has been as strong without the other. Having a debut like this has got to be hard to top (just ask Guns N Roses), but what a legacy it leaves. Every single song on here could have been a potential hit single, thats how good it was.

Time to expand on my previous comment: The album starts off explosively with Big Guns, moves onto some very catchy and humourous vocals with Sweet Little Sister and then comes onto the super commercial and catchy Can't Stand The Heartache which is the best off the disc I think. Piece of Me isn't as good but still better than other bands' filler. 18 and Life is a great ballad, Rattlesnake Shake and Youth Gone Wild are two other lessers but hard rockers anyway. Here I Am is the other monster of this disc. Superb, lyrics, vocals and rhythm on this one. Makin' A Mess is another hard rocker and I Remember You is the softer of the two ballads and pulled off wonderfully by Bach's vocals. The album ends with the average Midnight which while still OK leaves me wanting something better. This is Skid Row's best effort by far. The subsequent efforts got too heavy and less commercial. This is the formula they should've kept. This has to be heard to be believed.

I love Guns n Roses, but they are not the only band to have an AWESOME debut cd. Skid Rows debut is just as good as GnR's. Big Guns, Can't Stand the Heartache, Sweet Little Sister, Here I Am, Piece Of Me, Makin' A Mess, and I won't even mention the hits, One of my favorites along with the Firehouse debut!

Before Bach joined the band, Skid Row were supposed to be the next Bon Jovi, but by the time this album got recorded, they had become more like the East Coast's answer to Guns n' Roses. The songs are aggressive and in-your-face, and, just as importantly, the bad attitude felt REAL, not an act or gimmick like a lot of bands at the time, who never missed an opportunity to remind us they were "bad boys" (or boyz, if you prefer), even as they primped and pouted and generally looked ridiculous and came off as not particularly menacing. Skid Row, with a handful of others, actually gave you the imrpression that they actually WOULD kick your ass. Skid Row, L.A. Guns, Junkyard, early Crue, early GnR--don't bump into those guys in a crowded bar, watch your step. White Lion, Poison, Pretty Boy Floyd, Warrant, or anybody else, feel free, spill your drink all over 'em, nothin's gonna happen.

Okay, so, the album. It has a bit of a glossy '80's production sound still, and a couple more commercial, less-edgy tunes like "Can't Stand The Heartache" (even the band were over this one by the time the record came out, and dropped it from the setlist as soon as possible), but overall, a great listen throughout, even if, like me, you prefer the mind-blowing followup Slave To The Grind. Favorite tracks are "Big Guns," "Sweet Little Sister," "18 And Life," the often-overlooked "Here I Am," and of course, the ultimate fist-pumper "Youth Gone Wild." I'm surprised that wasn't the album title, actually, it would've been perfect.

Atlantic hit the target with this album. "Sweet" rebels played hard n'heavy with occasional sleaze fragrance and top-class ballads. Followers of GNR mixed with Pretty Maids (without keyboards of course) and Dangerous Toys. Btw. one of the most impressive front cover ever(IMO). 85/100.

I love Chuck Klosterman's assessment of this band, from his book Fargo rock City. Paraphrasing, but pretty close: "Skid Row weren't a band for kids who spent $11 on hairspray and $80 on leather pants and still got a CD player for Christmas. they were for the kids who stole beer and got in trouble with the police."

Have fun, dude. I've only seen them one time myself, in 2000, opening for Kiss, and honestly, they weren't that great, but I've heard they've gotten better with Johnny SOllinger as time goes on. These guys were my Favorite Band (upper-case letters on purpose) back in the early '90's, and as noted, Slave To The Grind is one of my desert-island discs.

Solid debut of a hard & edgy Hard Rock act but sold as well as a "pretty boy band" and somehow it killed the music which was good...tracks 5,6 & 10 were huge hits...tracks 1,2,7 & 11 are also good cuts...so in general lines this Record is quite appealing and good...87/100

I'm such a big fan of Slave To The Grind that I tend to forget how much I loved this first album as well, and just how much fun it is. To me, this type of music is made for summertime, being young, and driving around, so I usually have those kinds of mental images when I listen to it—not memories, because I was too young for that in 1989; more like the memories I want to have had. And Skid Row's debut is perfect for that kind of scenario. On this album, they were so good at straddling the line between being hard enough for the metal crowd, yet with enough huge hooks to appeal to a much wider audience without pandering. This record is dated by that wet, '80's production, and a few songs that sound like they belonged in 1986 like "Can't Stand The Heartache," but there's still that hard edge that only came post-GNR. My older sister claimed to love Skid Row, but what she really loved were the three big singles and, more importantly, Sebastian. She never asked to borrow the tape, and even t
