With a great, consistent back catalogue, every new Magnum album is generally something to look forward to and 'Escape From The Shadow Garden' is another good/very good addition to the Magnum cannon. Rock solid songs with a good mix of stuff, well played and presented, and as usual, some lovely Roger Dean artwork to top it all off. I will also add that I think this is probably the best Magnum album since the excellent 'Princess Alice and The Broken Arrow' in '07, so along with 'Brand New Morning'(terrific album) in '04, this for me slots into a comfortable 3rd place since the reformation in 2002. Non Magnum'ites will be less convinced I dare say, but for me, a very good album and great to still see the lads going strong.

If this isn't Magnum's final album, it may be MY final Magnum album. I never thought the phrase "It sounds like another Magnum album" would ever indicate a bad thing, but sadly it's come to that since they seem bent on continuously reviving the Brand New Morning template and becoming duly predictable. BNM was a grand disc, but Alice, Moonking, Visitation, 13th Day, and now Garden all run together into an indistinguishable mass lacking any distinct identities. Even Rodney Matthews resuming duty as cover artist adds to the "more of the same" deterioration. Yes, most bands have a particular "sound," but Clarkin's songwriting ability always kept Magnum's style fresh album-to-album; now even his craftsmanship seems stale. It's also disheartening to hear the once-mighty Catley now croaking melodies through what used to be golden vocal chords. But hey, lot's of people have kept buying AC/DC albums after "Flick of the Switch," so plenty of fans will be fine with Magnum's continued path. 65/100
