| New Soul Cowboys, if I recall, were kind of a "project" meant to spotlight Anthony GOmes, who I believe was an up-and-coming guitar-slinger at one point. That said, Gomes's playing is impeccable throughout )on guitar and on the various other stringed instruments that make appearances), but his playing here isn't as flashy as the "pick-up band around a shredder" stigma would lead you to believe. This is more hard southern rock in anything else, and reminds me of bands like Moon Dog Mane, Tattoo Rodeo, Georgia Satellites and maybe a whiff or two of Blackberry Smoke. It's southern rock that won't scare off the '80's-rock crowd, in other words, and would probably appeal to people who are into the loud modern country, particlarly the ones who used to listen to rock before they got old. The trouble is, Gomes is a better guitarist than he is a singer, and a lot of his songwriting is fairly plain when you get past the instrumental talent.

| His lyrics are pretty hackneyed and cheesy as well, with songs about motorcycles and whiskey and girls with blue ribbons in their hair (named after southern states, of course). To be sure, this is a pleasant listen, but really doesn't rise above average no matter how hard Gomes sings or how many instruments he brings out to dress up his bland songs. Worth a listen if you're way into southern rock, but don't expect to be blown away.
