What are these guys like?

From: METAL 4 EVER Date: September 20, 2002 at 14:28
Mistress is a great hair/AOR band, with a lot of catchy songs. They have a sound all their own, but if I had to commpair them to some bands I would say: Monro, Simon Says, Shelter, Shy, and slight hints of Winter's Reign. I highly recommend this cd, but unfortunately this cd has gotten very tough to find. The price above states $8.27, I don't know when that poll was taken, but I've only seen this cd on ebay once in the last year or so, and it went for well over that price. Good luck!Metal 4 Life

From: koogles Date: September 20, 2002 at 16:39
Metal 4 Ever: why don't you stop the pretentious name dropping and compare Mistress to some bands that people have actually heard. Simon Says, Shelter and Winter's Reign? You've been reading too many updates on PJ's collector's corner. Down to earth please.

From: TIM Date: September 20, 2002 at 17:31
That's funny koogles. I've actually got Shelter S/T coming. I'll put it on here when I do. I'll get Simon Says later.

From: purrfect-kat Date: September 20, 2002 at 21:38
I agree this band sounds like some of the bands METAL 4 EVER mentioned but I will go a little farther and say Heavy Harmonies is not far off the price at all. . They have the hair band look but their music style is very erractic to say the least . . One song sounds like they want to Rock and then the next song they sound like they want to snooze . . "Rockin" and "Mystery girl" are ok tunes and if I had to pick someone they sound like then I guess I would say the band "Magnum" if that helps

From: METAL 4 EVER Date: September 24, 2002 at 14:28
First off, I own the originals to all the bands I named. I didn't just name of a lot of rare CDs to sound cool, those are the bands that they sound like. No popular bands sound like them. And yes, I'm friends with PJ, and I did get a few of them from him. If your interested in Winter's Reign give PJ an e-mail he just recently got a copy from me. You can hear some of the bands I named on PJ's website www.kissmydisc.com (Very cool website), I highly suggest to give them a listen. Metal 4 Life

From: TIM Date: September 24, 2002 at 19:34
You are right METAL4EVER, some of the rare indies sound nothing like those on here. PJ's descriptions are accurate most of the time.

From: koogles Date: September 26, 2002 at 10:26
What I'm basically saying, METAL 4 EVER & TIM, is that to your average metalhead looking for a basis of comparison for Mistress, saying it sounds like Simon Says or Shelter is of no practical value. If you wanted to know what PJ looked like (for instance) and I said he looks just like some obscure Polish actor from the 1930's, would that be of any use to you? Hell no. I don't doubt that you have this CDs in your collection- good for you!- but a little less grandstanding would go a long way.

From: purrfect-kat Date: September 26, 2002 at 11:35
There is no right or wrong here but I know what koogles means . . I try myself to just mention bands I think most would know instead of saying a band sounds like Babe Blu . Slick Kitty . Sweet Teaze . Stallion . etc.. If I did that then very few would know what any of those bands sound like so it's not a fair comparison . . . (my lil opinion is) . .If Heavy Harmonies has Simon Says and Winters Reign listed on this site then use them as a desription but if not then refer to a band that is here.

From: TIM Date: September 26, 2002 at 12:34
I agree with you koogles, no one but a select few know who these megarare bands are. However, METAL4EVER is right about there not being a common band to compare them to without really stretching the truth.

From: TIM Date: September 26, 2002 at 12:49
Again, you and purrfect-kat are right in that it's unfair to name a band few would know. Coming up with the common band comparison is difficult sometimes though.

From: TIM Date: September 26, 2002 at 13:05
By the way, I need to find what I did with my copy of Sweet Teaze kat.

From: purrfect-kat Date: September 26, 2002 at 13:18
don't look at me . . . I don't have it . . Frisk me if ya want . . . .(raises her hands in the air)

From: METAL 4 EVER Date: September 26, 2002 at 18:21
Thanks TIM. And purrfect-kat, I'm not sure of the price on this CD, it could very well be $8.27, but I saw it on ebay go for quite a bit more then that. And I've only seen it once on ebay. So I'm just stating what I saw. But you are most likely right, and thanks for agreeing with me on what Mistress sounds like. Metal 4 Life

Are we talking about the same "Mistress"??? The one I have listed here is actually a local band from good ole' Central Illinois. I wouldn't have thought that anyone outside of this area would have ever heard of them. I'll go ahead and post some audio clips...

From: METAL 4 EVER Date: September 26, 2002 at 20:10
Yes Dan, we are talking about the Mistress from Illinois, and some sound clips would be great for those who have never heard these guys. I would recommend a sound clip on the song "Insatiable", it's my favorite on the album. And koogles you do drive a valid point, but to tell you the truth those bands I listed were the only bands that came to mind. Metal 4 Ever

There ya go. New cover art scan to boot. I never though of them as all that great. The disc was recorded in the town I live in; I run across it once or twice a year. Maybe I should snag it for trade bait the next time I find one...

From: TheRipper Date: November 16, 2002 at 19:33
Hey, I think this CD is underrated, as it has some good songs on it. It's pretty rare in my book, and if you can get it at $8.27, by ALL MEANS pick it up, as I have gotten much worse for more... 'Rockin' and 'Insatiable' are ones that come to mind that I dig. Good stuff here.

From: KeithPhelps Date: November 19, 2002 at 0:47
Hello - thanks for the kind words regarding our cd. I am Keith Phelps , the guitarist for Mistress. I am currently playing in Las Vegas and am working on a brand new MISTRESS cd with the 2 other original members + 2 new members. We are going to try to get a deal with MTM / Z Records / Escape / Frontiers or AOR Heaven and hopefully RE-Issue our first disc. I can tell you that the new album will sound similar to bands like Steelhouse Lane or Rainmaker. ROCK ON - MELODIC HARD ROCK RULES!

From: chaz Date: March 12, 2004 at 15:02
Is this the same MISTRESS that had a song called "China Lake" from the early 80's? Great AOR track that I play on live 365.

From: rick Date: June 3, 2004 at 9:34
wasn't there another "Mistress" that had a white album cover and was in the mold of "Foreigner"?

From: KeithPhelps Date: July 18, 2004 at 8:08
Hello - just an update for anybody interested - our new cd is close to completion and we'll be shopping for a label in the next few months. I think all fans of AOR and Melodic Hard Rock will dig the new stuff. WE WILL NOT incorporate any grungey/alternative influences on this new album. I will keep you posted as things develop. Again , thanks for the support and KEEP IT MELODIC!!

From: KeithPhelps Date: July 18, 2004 at 8:11
Sorry - one more thing - the new keyboardist is Sam McCaslin (one of eBay's prominent Hard Rock / Metal sellers VEGASMETAL) who has played on the SCHENKER-PATTISON cd and also toured with XYZ. ROCK ON!

From: Scandinavia Date: July 18, 2004 at 16:16
KEITH: Weren't you reviewed in an old edition of "Guitar for the practicing musician"??? I have a vague memory of reading 'bout the guitar player of WITNESS... Another band called WITNESS perhaps???

From: Scandinavia Date: July 18, 2004 at 16:17
Sorry!! It should read MISTRESS!!! *LOL* - Too much beer you know...

From: David Date: October 8, 2004 at 2:46
HOW IS THE NEW ALBUM COMING ALONG, I GET ASKED ABOUT IT ALOT!! HAVE YOU GUYS SIGNED TO A LABEL YET?? I'VE HEARD IT SOUNDS LIKE STEELHOUSE LANE'S SLAVE TO THE NEW WORLD!!!!!!! NOW THAT'S EXCITING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From: Geoff Date: January 8, 2005 at 2:49
Had this on the other day - very nice AOR / melodic rock disc. Doesn't have quite the killer punch I feel many songs could have packed, but nevertheless this is a good solid collection of melodic rock. I only have a CDR of this, but would like an original... but certainly not for $86. Still, very good disc.

From: Kip Date: March 19, 2005 at 22:40
I just heard "Love is on the Line" on the HH live365 broadcast and I need this album now.

From: forza-orietto Date: October 28, 2005 at 19:00
overrated band, great cover art, great look, but the songs ? nothings original and a bit "weak" IMO. 77/100 the singer has re-released it lately but any chances to score the 1st press ?

From: Aorforever Date: December 12, 2006 at 12:15
Kip: I just heard "Love is on the Line" on the HH live365 broadcast and I need this album now. Haha, me too! I want IT!

From: rick kerch vzla Date: April 21, 2010 at 21:01
Good album with good songs but maybe they needed a razor to sharpen them up..sometimes while listening the album, the word dull appeared many times, not in a bad way honestly because is not a bad album but maybe the tracks tend to sound weak at times or maybe with a stronger vocalist this should have sounded powerful..anyway "Rockin'" is a wonderful start and a very good song as is catchy as hell,"Don't Be Shy" and "Insatiable" are also very good tracks perhaps the best in here along with "Lonely Town"..."Drivin'" rocks a lot and "Matter Of Time" is a decent ballad...80/100

From: juan carlos Date: June 7, 2010 at 22:03
Great Melodic HardRock! the only track that iŽd consider as a filler would be "Matter of Time". "Don`t be Shy" "Lonely Town" "Love Is on the Line" "Insatiable" wow What a great tracks! Catchy Solos/Tunes as hell. Sam McCaslin was here? Wow friend, i want this one on CD, could be a re-issue CD via Retrospect?. 8.8/10
